MatStrong wrote this page, and MatStrong is our app. Everything we say about JuggernautBJJ comes from Juggernaut's own website, store listings and walkthrough videos, checked on October 27, 2026.

JuggernautBJJ comes from Chad Wesley Smith's Juggernaut Training Systems, and it's one of the best-known strength apps for jiu-jitsu. If you're weighing up an alternative, the two apps differ most in what goes into your plan and what happens when your week doesn't go to plan.

The short answer

  • Pick JuggernautBJJ if you train in a full gym with a barbell and rack, want a set program from a well-known strength coach, and like adjusting your training through a daily readiness check.
  • Pick MatStrong if your week rarely looks the same twice, you train in more than one place or with limited equipment, you're working around an injury, or you want sessions that fit the time you actually have.

How each app builds your plan

JuggernautBJJ

You choose one of five programs: Strength, Speed and Power, Endurance, Tournament Prep or Lifestyle. Setup asks your sex, age, height, weight and lifting experience, which weekdays you'll lift, how many BJJ sessions you do a week, how long your matches are, and your squat, bench, deadlift and chin-up numbers. The program design is set, and the app works out your sets and weights from your answers.

According to Juggernaut's own walkthrough, setup doesn't ask about your equipment, your injuries or how long you have to train.

MatStrong

MatStrong builds the plan from a 5-minute assessment: your belt, which days you're on the mat, your strength numbers, the equipment you have, what hurts, what you want to improve and how long you want sessions to be. You choose a 4, 8 or 12-week cycle, and it's laid out in phases with deload weeks, around the days you roll.

When your week changes

This is where the two apps differ most.

JuggernautBJJ adjusts through feedback. A daily readiness check asks how you slept, your mood and how you're eating, and you rate the effort of every set. From that, the app raises or lowers your sets and weights. You can swap an exercise for today or for the rest of the program, and the Lifestyle program copes with lifting a different number of days each week.

MatStrong rewrites the session itself:

  • Feels off: tell it what's bothering you, from neck to ankles, and today's session is rewritten around it.
  • Short on time: pick a duration from 15 to 90 minutes and the session is rebuilt to fit.
  • Different gym: switch to another saved location and sessions are built from the equipment there.
  • Move a session when your mat schedule shifts, add one, or make today a rest day.
  • Swap an exercise if you don't have the kit, it's too hard or it hurts.

If your goals or schedule change for good, you can regenerate the rest of the cycle instead of starting over.

Injuries

JuggernautBJJ doesn't ask about injuries. If something hurts, you swap the exercise for the day.

In MatStrong you report an injury by body area and severity, and the plan is built to work around it. When something new comes up, you add it and update the program, and when it's better you mark it resolved. Like any training app, it doesn't diagnose or treat injuries, so see a professional for anything that needs it.

Equipment and where you train

Juggernaut says most of its program can be done with a barbell, weights and a rack, plus bands, dumbbells or kettlebells and a medicine ball. There's no equipment setting, so in a different gym you swap exercises yourself.

MatStrong builds sessions from the equipment you tell it you have. You can save more than one place you train, such as a commercial gym, a garage gym and a hotel, each with its own equipment, and switch between them.

Logging your jiu-jitsu

Both apps log your mat time. JuggernautBJJ's BJJ check-in records how long you trained, how many live rounds you did and how hard it was, and feeds your readiness score. MatStrong logs each BJJ session with its intensity and duration, and the next cycle is built from what you did in the last one.

Switching from JuggernautBJJ

  1. Note your current numbers. MatStrong's assessment asks for your strength baselines, so write down your latest squat, bench, deadlift and pull-up numbers before you leave.
  2. Finish the block you're in if you're close to the end, so you don't cut a training phase short.
  3. Cancel where you subscribed: in the App Store or Google Play, or in your account on Juggernaut's website if you signed up there. Cancelling takes effect at the end of the billing period.

Common questions

Is JuggernautBJJ still updated?

As of October 27, 2026, the App Store lists its last update as version 1.1.9 in January 2025. The app is still on sale in the App Store and Google Play.

Does JuggernautBJJ work around injuries?

Its setup doesn't ask about injuries. You can swap an exercise for the day or for the rest of the program if something hurts. MatStrong asks about injuries in its assessment and builds the plan around them, and you can report new ones as they happen.

Can you use JuggernautBJJ at home?

Juggernaut says most of the program can be done with a barbell, weights and a rack, plus bands, dumbbells or kettlebells and a medicine ball. There's no equipment setting, so at home you swap exercises yourself. MatStrong builds sessions from the equipment you tell it you have, and you can save more than one place you train.

What's the main difference between JuggernautBJJ and MatStrong?

JuggernautBJJ gives you one of five set programs and adjusts the sets and weights from a daily readiness check. MatStrong builds the plan from your mat days, equipment, injuries and session length, and rewrites a session when you're tired, sore, short on time or at a different gym.

General training information, not medical advice. If something hurts, or you have a condition that affects how you train, see a qualified professional before you change your training.
